Last week, the TV network TNT (Turner Television Network) launched in the Benelux region (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg) by placing a red button on a stand in the middle of a quiet square in Flanders, Belgium. A small arrow was hung on a wire above the button that read “Push to Add Drama.”

Once someone got curious enough to push the button, the drama unfolded. In the youtube video released by the advertising agency, Duval Guillaume Modem, you can tell everyone in the area is amazed at the sequence of events that follow the pushing of the mystery button. What results is essentially every stereotypical scene from an action or drama movie including blaring ambulances, numerous accidents, gun shots fired, fights between muscular men, and a half naked girl on a motorcycle.

Once all of the action commences and the various characters seem to disappear, a large banner unrolls from the top of an adjacent storefront reading, “Your Daily Dose of Drama.” When onlookers see the banner, they seem to be relieved to discover what took place was only for fun.

The guerrilla method seemed to work for the network, because the video has become the second most shared video of all time, since its launch on April 10th, after the 2011 Volkswagen super bowl ad “The Force.”

After this stunt, it seems apparent that TNT lives up to their tagline: “We Know Drama.”

Sources (1, 2, and 3)

By Justyna Lewinska

For those of you who like to keep track of all of the things you like around your city, there’s a new app for the iPhone called CircleMe (also available in online format). The app allows for you to keep a collection of your favorite things (shops, restaurants, etc) and discover new ones. It also allows you to plant notes and have your friends stumble upon them when visiting one of your favorite places.

The app is perfect for those who like to be up to date with their top places, such as finding out when their favorite band is coming to their town. It’s also perfect for those who like a little excitement in their life and never know when they will stumble upon a note or suggestion from their friend just by walking into a local cafe. I think that this app could be a big hit as long as it has a strong following. Otherwise, if your friends are not on it, it’s just not as fun of an experience.

Openboard.com

By Max Schadler

Remember when Instagram for Android came out sometime last week? Instagram reports that 5 million Android users downloaded the app within 6 DAYS. In fact, 1 million of those downloads occurred in less than a day! This also explains why my app has been slower than usual…

In the midst of the billion dollar purchase, it comes to no surprise that Facebook pursued Instagram. By the looks of it, it seems as if this is the number one social media app (#1 Top Free app in my iPhone’s app store) and I hope that someday, it could be expanded to different smartphones, such as BlackBerry (who still has those?). One thing is for sure though, Instagram is here to stay… And they did it on their own.

Cinemagram

By: Emily Wyler

Cinemagram was launched earlier in 2012 by a Montreal based start-up called Factyl, Inc. This social photography app allows you to animate portions of your photos and then share them with the world. Cinemagram’s co-creator and company CEO Temoojin Chalasani explained that “Cinemagram is just one image with a subtle animation.”

After recording a short video, you’re able to select a specific portion of the video to be animated. You can also add a filter to your creation before sharing it via Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, or uploading it to the Cinemagram community.

“We’ve been fascinated by this art form since its first appearance last year in the world of fashion photography,” says Chalasani. “We see it as a way for photographers to bring out the essence of an image, and tell the story behind their pictures in a fun and beautiful way.”

Instagram + GIFs = Cinemagram. Download it for free on your iPhone today.

By Danni...

Adding a Little Heart to the Facebook “Like” Button

By Danni Scully

As social media platforms are being increasingly used for social change, the content posted becomes increasingly complicated. Sometimes you stumble upon a Facebook post that feels completely inappropriate to push the “like” button on. It just feels wrong to “like” a post about a modern example of racism or a natural disaster striking in the Midwest. Advertising agency DDB has created a new button to fill that philosophical void between like and dislike: “I Care.” The “I Care” button can be added to any website through the addition of some simple code, giving users the option to show that the issue affects them emotionally, not just positively. While similar to the share button, the I Care button aims to alter the social media diction that oversimplifies the complex interaction users have with content.

Lyst Shopping

By: Blake Metzger

Lyst is a twitter like newsfeed for shopping fanatics. The site enables users to follow their favorite brands, style icons, and magazines to get a personalized stream of content and sales. Similar to twitter, users can subscribe to, save, and share updates of different stores, brands, trendsetters, and friends. This information is then organized in a reverse-chronological “lyst” that serves as a newsfeed. Lyst visitors can also develop their own curated newsfeed of products and sales that can serve as a cross-platform shopping cart or virtual wish list. Lyst has gained overnight success and recognition for offering visual streams that offers updates of products that only you are interested in. Now, instead of searching for a product on numerous retail sites like Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom, inventory and product information are all present on Lyst. Furthermore, Lsyst users can narrow their searches by filtering in categories such as color and price. In reference to Twitter co-founder and CEO Chris Morton has stated that the service seeks “to recreate that sort of personalized experience, but centered around visually rich products, just for fashion.” Morton then went on to add, “In effect, [users’] stylefeeds become the place they are most likely to discover items they love.” Lyst has attracted hundreds of thousands of users since its debut and has driven millions of dollars in sales for its partnered companies. Lyst continues to prove the crucial need for retailers to be both active and present on the web. In 2012, it is vital for a successful retailer to have an online store to increase connectivity and presence across various social platforms whether it is Facebook, Pinterest, or Lyst.

Tweets in the Operating Room

By Ying Wang
