#Burberry: The Social Media Takeover
by Lorena Mora
Online shopping just got a little more social.
Iconic British brand Burberry recently debuted both their fashion show and collection on Twitter. Streaming fashion shows live from their respective fashion weeks is nothing new, but Burberry took it to the next level.
Firstly, they took the most obvious step — creating a hashtag that viewers and fans could use to discuss the show online. #Burberry and “Christopher Bailey” (CCO of Burberry) soon became worldwide trending topics.
Next came the utilization of .GIFS. Many Twitter users have been taking advantage of using .GIFS — moving images — as their avatars. Burberry took this idea and put their own .GIFS from the show on TwitPic. Fans could keep up with trends and looks from the shows minutes before they debuted on the catwalk.
Here’s a few straight from @Burberry’s stream:

Among other platforms Burberry tied-in to their show were:
- Facebook, where fans could view the show straight from Burberry’s page
- Pinterest, where fans could ‘pin’ their favorite looks
- Polyvore, a platform similar to Pinterest, where fans could incorporate select items into inspiration boards and collages
- iTunes, where Burberry made the show’s soundtrack available as a playlist to purchase
