And the Winner Is…
By: Danni Scully
With the Oscars less than a week away, the Internet has been buzzing with winning predictions and campaigns for overlooked performances. Many Tumblr and Twitter users were disgruntled by the Academy’s choice to overlook Michael Fassbender’s performance in Shame and Ryan Gosling’s turn in Drive. The loudest campaign has come from Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, however, with their hashtag #letthemuppetssing. The hashtag and Twitter account, Muppet Oscars 2012, are petitioning for the Muppets to perform at this year’s Oscar ceremony.
With the event getting closer and closer, it is no wonder that fans and critics alike have taken to social media to publish their opinions about this year’s nominations. A group of dedicated movie bloggers on Tumblr, went so far to create their own movie awards, the Tumblr Movie Awards. The bloggers created their own list of nominations including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Worst Oscar Snub, and Best Ship (a Tumblr term to describe approving of a relationship). Allowing other Tumblr users to vote, the Tumblr Movie Awards truly gave a voice to fans, allowing them to award those who they believed worthy. We’ll see if the Academy agrees with their decisions on Sunday.
