Young People Need Smart Phones!
By Max Schadler
Everyone knows that if you don’t have a smart phone, you are certainly behind in the times. Whether you are 15 or 75, these mobile devices are becoming a necessity to staying in touch with the outside world. It has become such a need amongst young people that even when they are making as little as $15,000 a year, their smartphone remains a cost they are willing to pay. In an article by Sarah Kessler, she emphasizes that despite expensive data packages, young people with no money are still going to pay the high monthly rate to be connected.
When we look at the reasons social media has had an affect on this, the answer is really quite simple. Social media is no longer something that we do in our homes. It is a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week commitment. Facebook connects us with our friends, LinkedIn with our work, and Twitter with the rest of the world. If you are not connected with all of those things at all times you could miss something.

As this graph shows, even when young people are making no money, they are still using more smart phones than the wealthiest older bracket. Smart phones have become like food or water. You need it for survival and will do whatever it takes to pay for it.
