This week, we’ll be covering IFTTT.

The Basics: IFTTT stands for IF This Then That. It uses the basic If…Then… coding statement and applies it to the social media sites or (as IFTTT calls them) channels in its terminology (Twitter, Facebook, ffffound!, Flickr, your cell phone, etc.).

These channels are used to create recipes, which is the core of IFTTT. Recipes allow you to link and easily share information between two channels and are the result of a successful If this, then that statements. Let me give you an example.

    Walkthrough:

Let’s say I was obsessed with a local celebrity’s Twitter feed and couldn’t miss a tweet. It would be AWESOME if I got an email notification whenever they tweeted, that would just be the cat’s meow! We’ll start with the If this… half.

    step 1

So if the channel Twitter is selected…

    step 2

    step 2 part 2

    …and a specific user tweets…

    step 3

    step 4

    …THEN SEND ME AN EMAIL!

    step 5

    step 6

And you end up with something that looks like this. You can save it, turn it on and off, and suggest it to other people.

The possibilities are endless. Here’s a list of some possibly life-changing recipes created through IFTTT:

    • When Facebook profile picture changes, update Twitter profile picture.
    • If its raining tomorrow, send me an email.
    • When a new book is added to Kindle Top 100 Free eBooks, send me an email.
    • Save all Instagram photos to Dropbox when I take them.
    • Automatically update my Twitter status when I update my Facebook status

TechCrunch calls IFTTT a “glue gun for sticking the web together,” and reports that it recently raised a big seed round of $1.5 million from top investors [via TechCrunch].

According to founder, Linden Tibbets, the big picture is to “connect the web to physical devices to get more value out of them.” As he puts it, it’s like outfitting your dog with a GPS-enabled collar, and setting up a fence that alerts you by phone or email about the escape. Real time, helpful, reliable and low-effort. All while maintaining complete synchrony.

IFTTT’s tagline is ‘put the internet to work for you.’ I like the sound of that.

Join here and start multitasking like a boss.
