University Memes: Latest Social Media Fad for College Students
By @meaghanbarry
As you may or may not have noticed all over your Facebook or Tumblr feed recently, university specific memes groups have been popping up all over the internet. College students began creating the groups to post humorous images which are then captioned and re-captioned to include phrases that relate to students who have attended the college or university.
A “meme” can be defined as “an idea or behavior that spreads through a culture by imitation”. The use of the internet and Facebook only creates more of a viral effect for memes to be spread faster through culture, in this case the college culture.
Emerson had a head start on the current craze, with a student creating the “Emerson Kid Lion” Tumblr page. Emerson’s student body, past and present, loved the memes featuring a lion mascot smoking a cigarette. The images would include captions of the funny daily experiences that all Emerson students can relate to, thus making them want to pass it on to their friends through social media.
Other college meme groups have come on to Facebook, such as Northeastern, Purdue, Holy Cross, Syracuse, Quinnipiac and NYU. Schools big and small have caught onto the craze, showing how students love to bond over the things that they may notice on a daily basis, but did not know that others did as well. Some of the college groups memes are more like “inside jokes” than others, but students are enjoying poking fun at their universities and relating with one another about experiences that happen around campus. From NYU Memes:

“They’re clever if they’re done right,” says Michael, a sophomore at Holy Cross. “They’re like quick easy laughs, easier than making a youtube or viral video, but still funny. Yet, they’re already starting to get old with all the college meme sites. Especially when they really aren’t witty or clever”.
Some people are starting to find the memes all over their Facebook feeds annoying, since the jokes are so specific to students. Users should also realize that this is just another internet fad that will most likely pass like all the others. But in most cases, the memes relate to college students in general, and if you are or were one, you’re in for a good laugh.
