1. Unfriended and Unfollowed. Who is ditching you on social media?

    By: @Maxwell_Mozes

We’ve all had it happen.  You log in to twitter and see that your follower count has gone down.  WHAT?  WHY WOULD ANYONE UNFOLLOW ME?  Well, it’s probably because you’re boring, don’t tweet enough, or tweet too much and annoyed your current followers.  There is also the chance that it was a spambot, or someone who jumped on and off your follower list in an attempt to get a follow-back.

Now there is a tool for you, a website actually.  It is called who.unfollowed.me and you can sign in with your twitter account to see four things.  Who unfollowed me, who’s not following me back, who I’m not following back, and unfollower history.   Creepy?  Yes.  Useful?  Yes.  Here is an example:

You can see that most of the people who unfollowed me in the past week were spambots, though one follower M_Caruso is a fellow Emerson Student.  I’M WATCHING YOU, MATT.   From this, you can begin to gather who is unfollowing you, why, and when they decide to make the cut.  You can take this information and start to improve your content and engage followers in an attempt to retain them.

For Facebook, the process is a little different.  If you’ve got Chrome, Firefox, IE, Opera, or Safari, you can go here.  This will allow you to install an extension into your browser.  Did you really expect Facebook to allow any modification of their code?  Absolutely not.  Anyway, install this and you’ll see a change in your Facebook panel that looks like this:

You are now part of the secret club that has an ‘unfriends’ tab on the top panel.

Now, it should be noted that the extension also includes people deactivating their profile as an ‘unfriend,’ though it still shows who has deactivated so you can differentiate between the two.    Beyond the unfriending/deactivating, you can also see who hasn’t accepted your request just yet.  You might want to consider if you still want to be friends with them if they’re holding out on you.

Yes these tools are a little creepy.  No you don’t necessarily need them.  What they do is give you the opportunity to monitor how loyal your following is on social media.  Are people leaving you?  Are they migrating towards you?  These will allow you to keep track of the changes that are happening, do something about them, and improve your use of social platforms.
