1. Leverage and how we use it:

    -Markus Garcia

Boston——-The Book Trust Agents talks about leverage and how it is used by the best to get what they want. While reading this chapter the first thing I thought of is how leverage is used in sports. We see it all the time someone has one or two spectacular seasons and all of sudden they have all the power. For example take Matt Flynn, the Green Bay Packers’ backup Quarterback this past season he started in 1 game. In this game he threw for 480 yards, 6 touchdowns and only threw 1 interception. Last year Flynn also started in 1 game against the New England Patriots, where he threw for 251 yards, 3 touchdowns and only 1 interception. After these two amazing games there are now talks Flynn could be in for a big contract with a team that needs a new Quarterback. Three years ago a team could have probably attainted Flynn from the Packers for a low round draft pick. Now that he has performed well and more importantly with a performance that has stuck out in people’s minds, Flynn has all the power and he will use it to get a nice hefty contract and any numbers of teams will give it to him. Why you ask? Because of the limited options available for people to choose from. Right now in the NFL there are arguably 3 or 4 top tier quarterbacks and everyone is trying to get one.

Which leads me into the non sports marketing world and a company that like Matt Flynn has all the power right now. And that’s Facebook. I know this seems like an obvious answer and to be honest it is. But there is something different about Facebook than the other social media sites. I think it may that Facebook is always making chages, yet it never seems to ask its users what they think or if they want these changes to be made. Most recently it was the creation on Timeline and how it was going to force everyone to switch over to the new layout. I think for a solid month i saw about 100 status saying how they didn’t want to switch to timeline and they would delete their Facebook before they switched. Others complained about the potential privacy issue and how they read timeline would not allow to delete any of your information and it would all be stored on the internet forever. For weeks this is what I saw and what happened when it came time for everyone to make the switch….they did. And of course they complained about it, but before long everything went back to normal. This happens all the time with Facebook people complain about changes, first it was getting rid of the is part of the status, then it was a layout complain etc. Yet every single time a majority of people make the switch. Because right now Facebook is the best social media site and there is no real alternative for people to go to. Meaning Facebook has all the leverage they can do whatever they want. Wether that includes changing their layout design, what kind of AD’s you see depending on your status, adding a geographic tag to your statuts etc.

Unless something new comes out that can challenge Facebook in every single aspect and IS 100 times BETTER, it has to be better than whats already out there. It can’t be just as good or a little better it has to essentially kill Facebook in every category in order to force people to switch over from Facebook to this new social media. And until that happens Facebook can do whatever it wants, because Mark Zuckerberg knows people will always comeback, because there is no other site out there that matches up to Facebook.
