1. Most Brands Fail to Connect Super Bowl Ads with Social Media: What does this mean?

During the 2011 Super Bowl, the unexpected happened: Famous Brands like Coca-Cola strongly encouraged their followers on both Facebook and Twitter to look out for their commercials during Super Bowl Sunday, but failed to add any URL or connection to social media sites after the end of their campaigns. Less than a third of companies displaying commercials of their products during the Superbowl actually promoted their online destinations, but those who did, such as Best Buy, flourished. What does this say about Social Media’s role in the emergence of new technology?

Clearly Social Media is playing a large role in the campaigning of corporate brands and company products, yet why is it that large brand names only remembered to promote their brands online before the Super Bowl, and not during? Big Mistake. According to Lora Schaeffer, Resource Interactive director of Social Media, because of this, ”Coca-Cola failed to make its multi-channel experience simple and seamless.”

Car Companies like Chevy and Chrysler on the other hand, were big winners in terms of connecting their television campaigns back to their online sites, and they did this in one of two different ways. Chevy chose to promote an application before and during the game to win prizes, drawing viewers to download the mobile application while at the same time, promoting their new car models. According to Schaeffer, by doing this, ”Chevy kept their brand relevant and quite literally (kept it) at the fingertips of consumers throughout game.” This kind of interactivity brought them all kinds of attention. Right on!

Chrysler had a much different approach, but was also successful. During the game, Chrysler had no social or online branding, but after the game, Chrysler continued the conversation about their campaign on Twitter, keeping people involved in the campaign even after it was over. This also brought Chrysler a lot more attention, showing that taking advantage of social media before, during, and after really help you capture the most attention from viewers. Every brand should be taking advantage of this fact!
