Super Bowl Ads Create Social Media Buzz
By: Jacqueline Lisinski
During the Super Bowl this year, the Giants victory, the Patriots 2nd devastating defeat, and Madonna’s interesting halftime show weren’t the only things being talked about on social media websites. Within seconds of them airing, the Internet was abuzz with comments about some of this year’s most popular Super Bowl advertisements.
The most talked about advertisement was for H&M and featured a nearly nude David Beckham sporting only a pair of white underwear. Within 45 minutes of the advertisement airing on television, it had received approximately 109,000 social media comments. Although there was an overwhelming high response to the advertisement, the comments were a mix of both positive and negative reactions. As expected, the majority of the comments, about 83% of them, were from females.

The second most talked about advertisement was Chrysler’s “It’s Halftime in America” ad which took on a bit more of a serious note. The commercial featured a “gritty” Clint Eastwood trying to rally Americans. Suzanne Vranica of The Wall Street Journal wrote, “Clint Eastwood has made Chrysler’s day.” This was the second year in a row that Chrysler used an emotionally charged advertisement during the Super Bowl and the success of their ads have proven that it works. Unlike the H&M advertisement, the Chrysler ad was more commented on by males, with 65% of the comments coming from males while only 35% of the comments were from females.

The most popular advertisement, which was only the 4th most talked about advertisement, was the Doritos commercial “Man’s Best Friend.” Out of all the comments that had been posted, 61% of them were positive. The ad, which was one of the many ads to feature dogs last night, starred a Great Dane who supposedly killed and then buried the family cat and used Doritos as hush money to silence his owner. The commercial was made for approximately $20 as part of Doritos’ “Crash the Super Bowl Contest” and was chosen by Doritos fans who had previously voted online for which two commercials they wanted to be aired during the Super Bowl.

Many of the other Super Bowl advertisements received significant buzz on social media sites, including the other Doritos ad “Sling Baby” and the Pepsi ad “King’s Court” which featured Elton John. Below is a list of the top 10 most talked about ads.
