Flipboard Is Now Available for iPhone!
By Sofia Nasr
Earlier in the semester for my individual presentation on a new social media platform I presented it on Flipboard, which is an iPad app that takes your feeds on your social media platforms and turns it into a “social magazine”.
After saying they received many requests for this, Flipboard now is no longer just an app for iPad anymore. This week they revealed the version of the Flipboard app for iPhone.

I think what Flipboard did that is important is that while they have kept the integrity of the app on the iPhone version, they recognized the experience is going to be different on the iPhone version than on the iPad. There are obviously ways you can interact on the iPad with the app that you can’t on the iPhone just because they are each different sizes and different devices.
Many of the same features of Flipboard such as how you can interact and share from your social networks have been kept, but they did add some new features designed for the iPhone version. One of them is called “Cover Stories”. Essentially the most shared and most important stories that are on your Flipboard sections will be shown. It learns from your interaction with others and with content you talk about or follow. As quoted in the press release, “The new Cover Stories gives readers one place to catch up on some of the most interesting news, updates and photos being shared at that moment.”

Also for the iPhone version there is the feature of “fast flip”. With the iPad version you “flip” pages of your “social magazine” like you would a print magazine. With the iPhone version though you “flip” pages vertically with your thumb. Flipboard calls it “a stack of stories, posts, and images” that you can swipe through with your iPhone in your hand.
People that own iPhones that were already using the iPad version of Flipboard can now also seamlessly transition all of their content with Flipboard accounts. You can create your own account so that you can log into your Flipboard accounts on both your iPad and iPhone and have all of your content and accounts on each device.
I feel I will always be a fan of the experience of Flipboard on iPad more. However, with so many people owning iPhones the creation of an iPhone app definitely creates an opportunity for Flipboard to tap into a new market and to also allow other people to be a part of the experience.
Download the iPhone app now at the Apple App Store.
